Captain Mohler was appointed as the Executive Secretary of the Department of Defense by Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis on May 15, 2017.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in June 1980 and completed recruit training at the Recruiting Training Command in Great Lakes, IL. He earned his commission as an Ensign in 1995 through the Limited Duty Officer Program, and transferred into the Human Resources Community in 2010.
Captain Mohler’s sea tours include assignments aboard USS KITTY HAWK (CV 63), USS WISCONSIN (BB 64), and Administration Officer in USS INCHON (MCS 12), USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN 69), and USS GEORGE H.W. BUSH (CVN 77). His shore tours include NRD New Jersey; the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Supreme Allied Command Atlantic; Officer-in-Charge, Personnel Support Activity Detachment Bangor, WA; Administration Officer, Naval Support Activity Norfolk, VA; Commander, Navy Recruiting Command Liaison Officer to OPNAV N1; and as Navy Recruiting Commands Director for Training and Quality Assurance. Captain Mohler served as the Flag Secretary for Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Commander, U.S. Pacific Command; and Commander, U.S. Central Command. He has also deployed as the J1 for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Transatlantic Division, Kandahar, Afghanistan. Commander Mohler command tour was as Executive Officer then Commanding Officer, NRD Richmond, VA.
Captain Mohler holds a Master of Arts Degree in National Resource Strategy from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, a Master of Science Degree in Education from Old Dominion University, and an Executive Master in Business Administration from Naval Postgraduate School. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Chapman University, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Saint Leo University, and a Professional Human Resources Certification from the Society for Human Resource Management. Lastly, he is a member of the honors society of Phi Kappa Phi, Old Dominion University chapter.
Captain Mohler has received various personal decorations and campaign awards including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and a Combat Action Ribbon.
Captain Mohler is a native of Washington D.C., and is married to Sharon Lynn Mohler, He and his wife have one daughter – Anna Elizabeth.
